Fundamentals of Educational Technology Leadership

EDTC 801 Summer
Institute I

Dr. Zieger - Summer 2016

Cohort 4 Showcase
This project required the entire cohort to come together and create our website.  We all worked together in different teams to develop a brand for our cohort, design a website, and plan a showcase presentation for the other cohorts.  This assignment definitely did a fantastic job of allowing us to really get to know one another and form a close bond.

Showcase Individual Contribution
For this assignment, we had to explain our contribution to the showcase.  I specifically worked on Website and Content creation with several other cohort members.  I collected information about each student, provided feedback on our cohort logo, and put together a list of resources to go on the website.  I was able to outline my strengths and weaknesses with regard to the overall group project of the showcase.

Professional Growth Plan
For my Professional Growth Plan (PGP) I put together in writing what I want to be as an educational technology leader, my educational leadership philosophy, and my goals to get there.  I was able to think about why I am in this program, where I hope to go within each year, and my end goals.

EDTC 802 Principles of Educational Technology Leadership
Dr. Carnahan - Summer 2016

Leadership Group Project
For this group project, I worked with Laszlo Pokorny, to read, learn, and explain Transformational Leadership in the Northouse book, Leadership: Theory and practice.  This was a fun jigsaw activity with each group having to present a different leadership style and provide a handout.  It was a helpful way to learn the material.

Technology Use Proposal
This assignment required us to develop a proposal for a specific application of technology in an educational setting.  I chose to focus on using Google Classroom as a district-wide learning management system (LMS).  I was able to get an in-depth look at Google Classroom, more than I already have, since I currently use it with my own students.

Research Paper (Literature Review)
This was a 4-6 page literature review on our choice of topic.  As a science educator I'm obviously interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), but I have been particularly curious about generating interest in Computer Science.  This field is extremely important as the United States will be seeing an explosion in STEM-related jobs in by the year 2020.

EDTC 804 Global Issues in Educational Technology Leadership
Dr. Shamburg - Fall 2016

Environmental Scan
This project required each student to review themes from news stories about international education.  We then presented the information we found on a collaborative Google map.  I specifically looked at STEM education.  I enjoyed the visual component of the map.

Curriculum Group Project
I worked with Rachael Sedeyn and Krista Welz to create a college-level course proposal that incorporated global issues.  We looked into transformative learning in urban education.  It was helpful to have the layout that NJCU uses for their course proposals as a template for this assignment.

Research Paper (Literature Review)
This 12-15 page literature review required us to choose an aspect of global education.  I looked into the global perspectives on STEM education.  In my paper I addressed the need for STEM education, STEM education at different levels of schooling, women in STEM, and critiques.  It was useful to be able to zoom out and gain a bigger picture perspective on this topic.

Design and Learning
This project had us individually design an exhibit for the Liberty Science Center.  As a science teacher, I enjoyed this assignment very much since it allowed for us to choose our own idea for an exhibit, and incorporate what we saw fit for a design.  The work of Don Norman was extremely useful for this paper.

Creating Meaningful Learning Environments with Technology
I contributed to this group paper with Richard Cottone and Alex Kuziola.  This project used a district technology plan to apply the principles of Bers (2012).  Using the literature we were able to make appropriate recommendations for a fictional district.  Making these connections was helpful and should be considered in the design of a district technology plan.

Teacher Evaluation in a Blended Learning Environment
For this group project, I worked with Richard Cottone and Alex Kuziola again to adapt the Danielson rubric to evaluate a teacher making use of a blended environment with a one-to-one program.  This assignment was useful since the Danielson rubric is popular with New York State Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR).

The Fifth Discipline in a Blended Environment
PowerPoint (view and play presentation for sound)      PDF
This assignment had students create a Pecha Kucha presentation applying the concepts of a learning organization to the work of Horn and Staker (2014).  It was a fun challenge to develop a Pecha Kucha and achieve 20 images/slides and speak for 20 seconds each.

Administration and Supervision of a Planned Growth Program
For this assignment, I worked with Christopher Farrell, Laszlo Pokorny, and Susan Marie Terra to develop a planned growth program for a district with a large population surge and new elementary and middle schools.  This assignment had us consider the mission of the district, laws, vision, tech resources and management, procedures, and evaluation tools.

Hiring Three Technology Coordinators
In this group paper, Dennissa Brown, Richard Cottone, Alexander Kuziola and I developed a set of job descriptions for an elementary, middle, and high school technology coordinator based on research.  This was an assignment that is useful for seeking employees or for us looking for future careers in this field.

Technology Implementation Plan
Michael Bermudez, Anna Boscarino, Laszlo Pokorny, Yalitza Vega-Bajana and I worked to develop a paper in which a fictional district's administration sought an increase in achievement in the areas of Mathematics or English based on district scores and standardized testing.  This paper focused on Blended and Adaptive learning for English Language Arts.

Professional Development Manual
I worked with the same group as the previous project to create a Professional Development Manual for technology.  This paper summarized the research on effective professional development in educational technology and provided a list of guidelines for implementing PD.  Creating guidelines was the more challenging part of this paper, but provided significant insight into what PD would be required to support the implementation of specific educational technology.
