Dr. Carnahan - Summer 2017

THEORY AND PRACTICE

Professional Growth Plan Formative Assessment
This assignment asked us to consider last summer's Professional Growth Plan (PGP) assignment and make updates.  Being able to reflect on the year's work allowed us to better think about our journey through this program and what our expectations are.

Educational Technology Leadership Performance Portfolio with Video Presentation
Portfolio      Video

For this assignment, we made updates to our website portfolios and create a video presentation to prepare us for next year's portfolio defense.  This assignment requires us to consider everything we've encountered so far in the program and select some of the most meaningful events to comment on.

Jobs Project
This project required us to examine jobs in the field available in Higher Ed, K-12, and Corporate.  I was able to look jobs for Director of Technology, Instructional Designer, Assistant Professor, Technology Integrator, and more.  This was a unique opportunity to think about what we might be interested in as ed tech leaders.

Dr. Zieger - Fall 2016

Emerging Technologies Group Project
For this group project I worked with Patrick Holness and Yalitza Vega-Bajana.  Each group was assigned a different emerging technology with the task of presenting an overview of the technology, benefits and limitations, and the educational applications.  Our topic was Makerspaces and we created a Prezi.  This was the first project I did that really had me go in-depth with Makerspaces and caused me to realize this could be a potential dissertation topic.

DIY PGP
This was an individual white paper that presented a solution to a problem.  I wrote about creating a Mini Maker Faire in my county.  Writing this paper required me to learn about many of the different aspects that would go into putting together an event like this.  Perhaps this could be something I work on in the near future.

Technology Theme Park
This was a fun project that required us to create a web-based learning experience.  I chose to make a virtual Makerspace incorporating five different technology-rich learning activities.  It was a challenge because we associate Making with hands-on, but there are plenty of websites that provide that kind of problem-solving and inquiry-based thinking online.

EDTC 807 Implementation
and Evaluation of
Curriculum

Dr. Shamburg - Spring 2017

Short Paper: Historical Roots
This paper had us summarize the curriculum struggles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries based on the Kliebard reading.  This project required us to really pick apart what happened in education during that time period and see how it has impacted what we currently experience today.  I found it very interesting to read about the different educational models that were developed.  No other courses I have taken in my schooling have covered this information.

Educational Technology in Context Group Project
For this 20-25 minute presentation, I worked with Kerry Magro, Veronica O'Neill, and Laszlo Pokorny.  We were tasked with describing 20 uses of technology in formal educational settings.  We did this through the lens of the SAMR model and then broke it down into primary, secondary, and higher education.  It was helpful to have people in our group with experience in all three of these educational levels.

Informal Learning
This paper required us to select a trend in informal learning and research the history, theory, and context of this activity or trend.  I wrote about Makerspaces outside of education where I researched and discussed engagement, locations, and success.  I found it interesting to look at Makerspaces from a perspective outside of formal education.  I would love to visit a commercial Makerspace or one in a public library.

Curriculum Implementation Plan Group Project
I worked with Yalitza Vega-Bajana and Krista Welz on this paper that outlined an after-school STEM Makerspace program.  We had to develop a proposal to implement a technology-related curriculum in an educational setting and, in doing so, provide an overview, a systems-based proposal, an evaluation plan, and a reflection.  For me, this was a useful project since I've been focusing on Makerspaces.

Simulation Case Study
In this group activity, I worked with Ronnie O'Neill, Yalitza Vega-Bajana, Laszlo Pokorny, Steven Lahullier, and Leah Shull.  We engaged in the Harvard Business Mount Everest Expedition simulation while helped to reinforce student learning in group dynamics and leadership.

Higher Ed Case Studies
For this project, we individually analyzed two case studies and created a needs analysis for each.  We then created a set of goals and objectives for each case.  As an ed tech leader, the ability to assess a situation and create suggestions, goals, and objectives is a useful skill.

Leadership Vision and ELearning Plan
This individual paper required us to share a vision of e-learning for a workplace, generate a technology plan, and develop a proposal to seek funding for the plan.  For my project, I focused on my background of Makerspaces.

Online Community Search
This assignment had us create a hangout outlining two models of online communities.  I specifically looked at MakerShare and DeviantArt.  It was fun and informative to be able to find online communities, examine each, and make comparisons.  This project was useful for Assessment 3 in which we had to design our own online community.

Context Analysis
For this group project, I worked with Dennissa Brown and Steven Lahullier to research and speak with members of Reddit.  This assignment was challenging because some other online communities were unresponsive.  The project was very insightful and provided a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of a popular online community.

Design of an Online Community
Paper    Online Community: K12 Makers

The final project for this course required students to create a prototype of an online community.  This assignment was fun since I enjoy building websites.  The previous assignments in this course helped prepare us to build our own community based on research and exemplars.
